Childhood Wounds in Cats Eye essays

Childhood Wounds in Cat's Eye essays Elaine Risely is an artist who returns to her childhood home of Toronto for an art exhibition, and confronts her deeply buried feelings of inadequacy and pain from her childhood while she is there. Elaine is a happy young girl at first, but as she makes friends with other girls, she finds they are always watching her, waiting for her to do something wrong, whether it is in Sunday school, or in her house, which does not "measure up" to theirs. Carol sees her unfinished house with "incredulous glee, . . . as if she's reporting on the antics of some primitive tribe" (Atwood 49). In fact, the girls games and taunting become even more grisly as they bury Elaine alive, in a "pretend" game. "They pick me up by the underarms and lower me into the hole. Then they arrange the boards over the top. The daylight air disappears, and there is the sound of dirt hitting the boards, shovelful after shovelful. Inside the hole it's cold and dim and damp and smells like toad burrows" (Atwood 112-113). It is after this incident that Elaine realizes she has lost control of herself, and she begins to live two different and separate lives, one, where she appears happy and content, and one where she is caught up in the pain of her past that she cannot forget. She notes early in the novel, "If you can bend space you can bend time also, and if you knew enough and could move faster than light you could travel backwards in time and exist in two places at once" (Atwood 3). In fact, she does exist in two places at once, and it is tearing her life apart at the seams. She says later, At these times I feel blurred, as if there are two of me, one superimposed on the other, but imperfectly. There's an edge of transparency, and beside it a rim of solid flesh that's without feeling, like a scar. I can see what's happening, I can hear what's being said to me, but I don't hav...

3 Cases of Poorly Constructed Points and Counterpoints

3 Cases of Poorly Constructed Points and Counterpoints 3 Cases of Poorly Constructed Points and Counterpoints 3 Cases of Poorly Constructed Points and Counterpoints By Mark Nichol In each of the following sentences, a point and a counterpoint are posited, but the phrasing that supports them is poorly constructed; explanations and revisions that follow each example describe the problem and provide a solution. 1. The cynic in me believes it’s rarely done for aesthetic reasons but for strictly commercial ones. This sentence requires an adverb complementary to rarely, and because that word and its opposite must share the verb done, the verb must precede both adverbs: â€Å"The cynic in me believes it’s done rarely for aesthetic reasons but often for strictly commercial ones.† 2. The audience doesn’t quite receive the events of the movie as a crisis, but rather as a calamity. Similarly, for the point and counterpoint in this example to effectively share the verb receive, that word should immediately follow the subject, which requires delaying the not from its disguised appearance in the front-positioned doesn’t to immediately before the point, parallel with rather positioned before the counterpoint: â€Å"The audience receives the events of the movie not as a crisis, but rather as a calamity.† 3. Don’t fear the enemy that attacks you, but the fake friend who hugs you. This sentence may appear correct at first glance, but it is flawed in that the second half of the sentence doesn’t work as an independent clause (it lacks a verb following the conjunction but) or a dependent clause (it is complementary to, rather than dependent on, the main clause). The revision â€Å"Don’t fear the enemy that attacks you, but fear the fake friend who hugs you† is technically correct but flat, and it does not bear the same emphasis. â€Å"Fear not the enemy that attacks you, but the fake friend who hugs you† is valid because positioning fear before not allows â€Å"the enemy who attacks you† and â€Å"the fake friend who hugs you† to be parallel in construction. However, the archaic-looking syntax may be off-putting, so consider revising the statement so that it consists of independent clauses separated by a period or, better yet, a semicolon: â€Å"Don’t fear the enemy that attacks you; fear the fake friend who hugs you.† Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? The value of marketing research to organizations Essay

The value of marketing research to organizations - Essay Example Marketing research is key to implementing the marketing concept of an organisation as it reflects the genuine market orientation of an organisation through extensive and regular studies of customer, competitors and environmental trends. Market research helps firms become more market oriented, as such, the firm is able to implement its market concept and shape its cultural orientation in a way that focuses its efforts to the needs of the market (Xu, 2005 P.234).   Market research informs the organisation on the current consumer needs enabling it to develop future products that will tap latent needs thus strengthening the organizations position over time. Using market research data, the organisation is able to execute value-based differentiation strategies that drive product development processes, communication programs and delivery processes. For example, McQuarrie asserts that when AT&T entered the credit card business in 1990, its most important competitive advantage was an in-dep th knowledge of its prospective customers. This enabled it to launch the highly successful Universal card ( McQuarrie, 2006, P.167).   Research has indicated that the most important factors in developing new product is understanding user preferences and incorporating them into the design of the new product. McQuarrie in his research on new products asserts that users are an alternative source of new ideas ( McQuarrie, 2006, P.167).   Pride and   Ferrell argue that market research provides organizations with an opportunity.

Milly's Moped Report Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Milly's Moped Report - Essay Example If there are any documents as printed or physical output, they are outputs of this process too. Distribution or Logistics is another process found in the case. The distribution plans are used as inputs and the delivery schedule is used to plan deliveries to the whole sellers. As a result, the scheduled deliveries are matched with the completed orders and discrepancies are reported as an internal report. Information given as input and received as output serves the information needs of management at various levels. The three types of information needs being met by the information are (i) Strategic level, (ii) Tactical level and (iii) Operational level. Strategic level information is the information needed for strategic decisions. These decisions are made by top management and senior personnel of any organization. In the above processes, various types of information are to be used by the top management of Milly's Mopeds. The capacity shortfalls, bottlenecks in assembly, expansion decisions and changes in core competencies are the major information areas which are strategic in nature for Milly's top management. Tactical level information is meant for middle level management for managing and allocating resources for the organization. In this case, the information and inputs and outputs like selection of distributors, selecting channels, making delivery schedules and making budgets are all tactical level information. At the operational level, the very basics of operations are carried out. It involves the routine day-to-day activities that are carried out in the normal course of business. The information gathered from the inputs, outputs and reports of the business processes in this area are the feedback from operations, inventory and stock updates, operations reports and problem reports. The information systems and information technology has taken a new role over the past few years. The concept of Strategic Information systems is present today which was never existent before. This has huge application of Information Technology. (O'Brien, James A., (2002). Trends In Information Systems. McGraw-Hill) With the introduction to information technology, the information handling, storage and processing has become very efficient. Huge data repositories are now in place by almost all companies. Milly and Graham were also suggested and advised to use a database to solve their problems. Databases will provide them the data storage solutions. The interface and designing can be easily done to take data out from the database and use it for their needs. 2. Marketing in specialist literature The business process of marketing in specialist literature is focused on carrying out the task of marketing the mopeds by the use of specialist literature. Special literature may include the literature targeted to various levels of customers. The reason for selecting this process for detailed analysis was because it is a core process for Milly.

Law and Real Estate Essay Example for Free

Law and Real Estate Essay Executive Summary Pacific Grove Spice started as a small specialty grocer on the Monterey Peninsula of California in the early 1980s. Within 10 years they were the â€Å"place† to find spices in Central California and now have a widespread reach covering all 50 states. The spice industry that it is in has been growing steadily because of how important a role spices are getting in the kitchens and in cooking. The growing concern about obesity and diet has also left a positive impact because of the health conscious people that desire healthier meals that are still favorable. The demand for spices is at an all-time high and although multinational firms like McCormick Company dominate the industry, many small firms are competing successfully, Pacific Grove spice being one of them. The problem that Debra Peterson and Fletcher Hodges are having is that they have three choices to make. They have to decide whether they should accept an offer from a cable-cooking network to produce and sponsor a new program, raise new equity by selling shares of common stock, and/or acquire High Country Seasonings-a privately owned spice company. While making their decision they have to keep in mind that the bank financing their company wants them to reduce interest-bearing debt to less than 55% of total assets and the equity multiplier to less than 2.7 times by June 2012. We recommend that Introduction Debra Peterson is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Pacific Grove Spice Company. The Chief Financial Officer, Fletcher Hodges, and she are trying to figure out what strategy to take to meet the demands of the bank that finances their company. The recent financial crisis had made the credit committee uneasy and they now want Pacific Grove Spice to reduce interest-bearing debt to less than 55% of total assets and the equity multiplier to less than 2.7 times by June 2012. They have three options they are currently considering and this case study illustrates the financial forecasts for the next few years and showcases what we feel is the best decision for them regarding their options and the banks demands. Analysis Pacific Grove Spice’s operations are not profitable enough to quickly bring  it into compliance with the bank’s requirements. It’ll take about four years with just the regular operations.

Tourism ] Essay -- essays research papers fc

Tourism The French define tourism as â€Å"the art to satisfy the most diverse aspirations which invite man to move out of his daily universe.† The Webster’s dictionary defines tourism as â€Å"the guiding or managing of tourists; the promotion or encouragement of touring: the accommodation of tourists.† Both definitions are apt for tourism. The private sector of tourism includes lodging, food, transportation, recreation facilities, attractions, travel agents, and tour operators. These in turn are supported by a variety of specialized services, such as research promotion and printing. In the public sector, promotion of tourism on behalf of the state or communities is a major activity. In addition, there is the infrastructure of travel and tourism-such as roads, bridges, and utilities-and the public investment, federal, state in land and a wide range of recreational amenities and facilities. Tourism consists primarily of travel for pleasure purposes. It does not n ormally involve a large measure of physical exertion, nor does it involve acquisition of new skills. Tourism is oriented to the consumer rather than to the producer, and the economic impact of tourism comes primarily from multiple retail purchases by the tourists in a variety of establishments. The average household spends more on tourism as its real income increase (The National Tourism Resources Review, 1976). The City as a Tourist Resource The City’s appeal is based on eight general categories of attractions: Business opportunities, both work and personal; recreation; cultural/educational facilities; contact with people; amusement and entertainment; special events; shops; and atmosphere. The pull of these attractions is in turn affected by five variables; reputation, cost overall quality of the urban environment (of which big-city problems, particularly crime, congestion and inconvenience are a part) locations and climate. The strength of a city’ s appeal depends on a combination of some or all of these factors, measured against the allure of other cities or alternative destinations. The broader the range of attractions and the more positive the other variables in reinforcing them, the larger and more stable will be the scope of a city’s tourist business. For instance, a City like Miami Beach which offers mainly recreational opportunities which depend on climate for their use appeals primarily to disc... ... and ugliness, of wealth and poverty, of creativity and mediocrity. All that is found in a city, and all that happens in one, together form a living environment. It is composed of people, buildings, attitudes, work problems, etc. It is this total atmosphere that confronts a tourist when he thinks of visiting a city. Is the environment desirable? The total tourist is most affected by total environment in all its aspects, positive and negative, than any other group. Because the tourist has freedom of choice and a wider range of wants and needs with personal preferences, he will weigh more variables in selecting his destination. Lemongrass as a Insect Repellent

Homemade Lemongrass Insect Repellent In heaven you won't hear the mosquitoes ~Finnish proverb Similar to citronella oil as a natural insect repellent, fresh lemongrass also provides added antibacterial and anti-fungal properties to your homemade insect repellent. Here is a quick and easy recipe for making your own insect repellent at home. Ingredients 10-12 lemongrass stalks Approx. 15 citronella leaves 4 tsp whole cloves 14oz sunflower oil (other oils you have on-hand will work OK too)Wash the lemongrass and citronella leaves. Lightly chop the lemongrass and citronella. Place chopped items in a blender with the cloves and blend. Pour the blended mix along with the sunflower oil into a heatproof bowl or a pan (a double boiler is what we're setting up next) and mix until all ingredients are well blended. Place the bowl or pan over a pan of boiling water and cover tightly. Let boil for an hour, and then cool. Strain the cooled mixture through a fine sieve or similar tool/material.Pour the strained mixture into a pump spray bottle. To Use Shake well and spray liberally over all exposed skin areas. Avoid the eyes. Always reapply after washing. If any irritation occurs wash off immediately and discontinue use. This insect repellent will keep for about a year if stored in a cool and dry location. Some people grow their own lemongrass from stalks purchased at the market, and if you can do this all the better for you. Maybe you can make some extra batches of the repellent and share with your friends and neighbors.Other uses for lemongrass include herbal tea made from an infusion of the chopped herb soaked in boiling water and then strained. Used in this method lemongrass is good for helping reduce fevers, stomach cramps, and as a general digestive aid. Although this recipe does not call for either lemongrass or citronella oils please note that neither oil should be used directly on the skin; they should always be diluted. This is just one variation of a homemade insect repellent. Please feel free to share your own recipes.

African American Minority Group Essay

Among many of the ethnic groups that experienced a combination of segregation, racism, and prejudice; African Americans is one of the few that is still faced with one or more forms of discrimination today. The majority of African Americans came to the United States from Africa to be slaves, while others are citizens or residents of the United States from partial ancestry a form of the native population. In 1619, the first recorded Africans were recorded in British North America in Jamestown, Virginia, and the numbers began to increase as more English settlers died from harsh conditions and the Africans were brought to work as laborers. In the late 1700s the American Revolution occurred, which landed approximately 3 million Africans in slavery in the United States by the mid-1800s, (Centerwall, Brandon, 1984). In 1863 President Abraham Lincoln declared that all slaves in the United States from a Union were free. Meanwhile the declaration of Africans being free from slavery was joyful event, it was also the beginning of a growing battle that lead to a different approach of discrimination including; segregation, prejudice, and racism. By the 1900s, the African American population increased, which majority of the population lived in the Southern states of the United States. The Southern states enforced the Jim Crow laws, which mandated racial segregation in all public facilities giving white Americans advantages over black Americans in public schools, public transportation, restrooms, restaurants and drinking fountains. In order to eliminate the control that white Americans had over African Americans, African Americans began to build their own schools, churches, and communities. Although, African Americans building their own communities was the intention of avoiding the humiliation of the Jim Crow laws, it still didn’t prevent the African Americans from becoming victims of racially motivated violence. African Americans experienced countless acts of violence incidents that lead blacks battered, beaten and even dead in some cases. White Americans begin to form organizations that promoted white power, leading the organizations to practice out violence and destroy African Americans property. A popular white power organization called themselves the Ku Klux Klan and performed acts against blacks that included; lynching cross burnings, physical violence, and house burnings towards African Americans. Although, the Ku Klux Klan was formed in 1867, it has been rumors that there are people that are still secretly members today. African Americans experienced a wider range of discrimination, segregation, and racism more so in the later days but still arise in society today. In a perfect world, no one would be judged by the color of their skin and society would focus on a person’s individual true character. Often times African Americans miss out on opportunities because they are being judged by the color of their skin, rather than their abilities. The United States has tried to provide Americans the rights to equal opportunity, by creating the Affirmative action. The affirmative action eliminates people being granted opportunities based on their race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation or national origin and ensures that minority groups within a society receive equal opportunities. Although, the affirmative action was intended to diminish situations which cause people to participate in different forms of discrimination, but unless it could be fully proven that African Americans were being passed up for jobs, education, income and other forms of advancements there will never be a way to fully prohibit this form of discrimination. Today, there is still unequal opportunities and discriminatory treatment that occurs in the United States especially with African Americans. African Americans were affected by many forms of discrimination that decreased advancement to equal other races in society. They were faced with dual labor market, forcing blacks to work in lower labor market areas. Redlining was enforced by keeping businesses from helping African Americans simply because of the area they lived in. Many African Americans wanted to better themselves by furthering their education, but suffered from institutional discrimination and given less information and aid for education. Knowing the history of the African American struggles on; prejudice, discrimination, and segregation allows me to understand my roots and accomplishments of my ethnic group. Personally the history of African Americans affects me greatly, because it is the combination of struggles that has played a huge role to my advancements and opportunities performed daily. The African American ancestors fought daily through all counts of discrimination helps that allows all groups of different minority groups the same equal rights for advancement opportunities. Although, the majority of the world views of African Americans has changed there are still people that choose to discriminate against African Americans by choosing not to change with the ways of the world and maintain prejudice. Acts of discrimination is performed but not as greatly as many years ago. African American culture has had a rough past journey, but in the long run the majority of the United States has made it possible for all African Americans equal rights and opportunities in life.

buy custom Gay Rights essay

buy custom Gay Rights essay Special rights is a phrase used to refer to laws granting privileges to one and more groups of which are not extended to all other groups. Thoughts of special rights are contentious, as they spar with the theory of fairness before the law. Same-sex marriage happens to be a legally or socially accepted marriage between two people of the same social gender. Ever since the year 2001, ten countries and other several jurisdictions have begun officially formalizing gay-sex marriages and the recognition of marriages such as those ones happens to be, political, social, civil, moral, and religious in many nations. The conflicts occur over whether gay-sex couples be supposed to enter into marriage, be required to use diverse status like such as a public union, which either gives equal rights as marriage or restricted rights in contrast to marriage, or fail to have at all such rights. A linked concern is whether the word marriage should be applied. An argument to support the gay marriage happens to be denying gay and lesbian couples lawful access to marriage and every one of its assistant benefits represents favoritism based on sexual orientation; various American scientific bodies concur with this assertion. Another argument in hold up of the same-sex marriage is the allegation that psychological, physical well-being, financials are enhanced by marriages, ABC and that children who are of the same-sex couples have a benefit of being brought up by two parents within a officially recognized union which is supported by societys institutions. The Court documents that are filed by the American scientific associations states that singling out same-sex as being ineligible for marriage it stigmatizes and also invites public prejudice against them. American Anthropological organization avers that social science research did not support the analysis that either civilization or feasible social orders depend in the lead of not recognizing same-sex marriage. Some other arguments for same-sex marriage happens to be based upon what is referred as a general human rights issue, physical and mental health concerns, sameness before the law and also the aim of normalizing LGBT associations. Al Sharpton and numerous other authors point opposition to same-sex marriage as being from homophobia or heterosexism and associate prohibitions on the same-sex marriage to precedent prohibitions on interracial marriage. One argument in opposition to same-sex marriage happens to arise from a refutation of the use of the remark "marriage" as apply to same-sex couples, and also the objections concerning the legal and social class of marriage itself being useful to same-sex partners beneath any terms. Other stated arguments consist of direct and the indirect social penalty of same-sex marriages, tradition, Parenting concerns and religious grounds. Just like homosexuals have shown amongst us the quite a long period of time, when most these does not go successfully, application of any word in shutting the opposition may prove quite helpful. The one ought to go ahead and teach them that there is no particular time when name will ever be repeated by children, as is so vile. Then shun all those adults who would make an attempt of using selected words in order to figure out the true nature as pertains to nature of it with regard to all who practice it. And, to top that all off, the given perpetrators will seek for, and lobby even for, politicians who tend to legislate into the law some unsuitable punishments to prevent anybody who never agrees to go along with their given hoax that is devised to purposely break Gods law and mans law. When growing up, the phrase, queer, was used by the society to identify men and women who happened to have a physical complex on the same sex like them. It was known as abnormal behavior. And many parents protected the ears and eyes of their kids; this was mainly to ignore such behaviors within their existence and also teaching their children to fasten it out. During that time, though many such abnormal adherents happened to be found amongst the artists and in the entertainment fields, the queer society seemed to have established some degree of decorum by not pompous their lifestyle in opn humanity. For the most part, the Americans tried to be considerate and, in some cases, still supportive in acknowledgment of their uncertainty about whom they were. Though, perplexed or not, they have silently perpetrated one of the best hoaxes ever made to the American people. This had to do with a comparatively easy-to-debunk reply from opponents. But it yet had to fully happen. They know what God had to say concerning it and they had resisted His way. Due to this, the gay way has contaminated every region of this nations heretofore general logic way of life, as it pertains to Godly role of men and women, to say nothing concerning their different bodily aspects of life. The problem that we are still facing is that Americans are still fighting against a lie from the beginning. Once you begin out with the wrong basis, no matter how much you attempt, the reply will never be correct. The trouble will only get worse. The false basis the homosexual society foist upon this nation was to encourage the nation that gay and lesbian, and now, tri- bi- and anything else they can approach up with, is a right they have by asset of the United States establishment and that the homosexuals are permitted to equal shield of the law in the same way the black people acquire privileges as a protected class. And it would emerge that, following the same strategy of the civil privileges movement, the queer generation resolute that they would plan their own agenda in a similar way so as to help them to justify their adopted wicked lifestyle. And later they put out to do it. On the other hand, that attitude is a lie from the pits of Hell. This had caused the deterioration of an entire culture into making an excuse for distortion which infect this nation and threatens it more than it had ever done and it forever redefine what marriage constitutes of and the family structure.(Agren, "Mexican States Ordered to Honor Gay Marriages). It does not matter how much everybody wants to eliminate Gods plan for all humanity and rephrase the laws of God to man, it will eternally remain true that only one man and one woman are supposed to mate. Even in the animal kingdom there is enough sense to understand definite difference between the sexes! There happens to be only two sexes so is this so difficult to be sorted out? Is there need for further proof? Separate all men from all women as long as the east is from west and then wait to see how many generations that will come forth. Since they are so far ahead, they will neither listen nor adhere. This is the time that the citizens should stop capitulating their hoaxes. For many years, they lined together as a group, re-branded they, faked their platform, and designed to attack our school boards to intimate their program into the re-education of pliable young minds. Whereas they waited, they stomped the Judeo-Christian and also the loyal constitutional foundational truths and made away with it step by step until the Americans feud about the most essential way of life (i.e., who happens to be a man and a woman and by how much should the government arbitrate towards changing of the physiological fact of life?). But for the political rightness, and as the FOX Cable TV says, a fair and unbiased debate about the theme, we would never be confronted with such unbearable circumstances today. This should have been stopped starting from the beginning. Telling the truth about something happens to be more than fair. Special Rights versus Homosexual Hoax Homosexuals, in spite of what name they desire to call themselves, are in problem and the American society require not suffer, for the reason of their inadequacies. They worked on the makers of the law until they incorporated them in the cosseted class while they affirmed what would be sufficient for them. Then they used their unlawful laws gained to push the rights far that they persisted to make up out the entire cloth when, in reality, they already had their lawful rights which were gained altogether by the citizens in agreement with laws formed against prejudice of creed, color, religion, race and national origin. If anyone fits into any of those legal cattegories, their rights are already confined. Therefore, Homosexuals have gained special rights by enduring to atrium legislators to surpass more laws to incorporate, their unexpected lifestyle as a right. Where it leaves all other deviant behaviorist? Are they also supposed to be accepted? Then is it not possible to open the gates of the jail houses and then free everybody to roam around the streets and do all that pleases them? This will never come to happen in a stable society. Since there is an obvious definition concerning the male and female sexes, there are clear definite races of people. That is, until the homosexual society misinformation spread like wild fire in a previous civilized society. The term, multiplicity, which became a new buzz expression, for the gay lifestyle, today the word, gay does not only apply to a person who loves life and likes celebrating life. The gay lifestyle may require further debate, if there is need, but it is not on the matter of what marriage and family constitutes of, or whether they need to hear it or not, God settled that question that any one who tries to teach something else will ever make it to be untrue. Similarly, the long-time argument whether the government should allow this behavior of gay marriage to continue ceased to be realistic when they practically put their bedroom behaviors everywhere into our streets! Contrary to accepted opinion, the government has a role to play and not only when it suits their unholy behavior. If this was not the case, there would be no need for prisons and the police to supervise all kind of behaviors. There also would be no importance of having laws and penalties enacted because of prevention against people breaking them. Which is the reason why the homosexuality be legislated as precise and as an applicable lifestyle? Since they know it is not a right behavior and thus they could not do otherwise to get it through any of the lawmaking body although this nation, since the citizens would never be in support of it. The Gay Rights Family and Relationships The gays should be allowed to adoption children in each and every state. This is not supposed to be only in the nineteen states. Just like in the nineteen states, they adopt mainly in a complex and expensive processes, where one parent first adopts a child and the second parent petitions for joint rights. They should also have ceremonial marriage which may be official including even the church elders or ay one else. They should also be allowed have a domestic partnership registration, where by they are allowed to go to public records like a non-married couple. This is a major benefit since it establishes a legal responsibility after a relationship dies. They also ought to be offered a domestic partner benefits as workers in an organization since is based to sign a legal affidavit which defines an economic relationship. Gay-rights movement organizes an effort to stop the criminalization of homosexuality and also protect the social rightsof homosexuals. Whereas, there were some planned movements on behalf of the rights of homosexuals since the mid-19th throughout the first half of the 20th century, modern gay-rights progress in the United States is regularly said to have started with the Stonewall riot during June, 1969 at the New York City, and this resulted from a police raid on an unlawful gay bar. A number of groups, were formed to work to abolish the laws prohibiting consensual homosexual behavior; for legislation without discrimination not in favor of gays in housing and also in employment; and for greater recognition of homosexuals amongst t all the people. Through 1999 the anti-sodomy law of 32 states was repealed or confirmed as unlawful; in all states but only five states, the anti-sodomy laws were applied to both homosexual and heterosexuals. The highest Court reversed all state anti-sodomy laws during the year 2003; it ruled that any Texas law which was applying to homosexuals was unauthorized, but the Court repudiated a 1986 resolution where it had refused to broaden the right of confidentiality to consensual sexual acts. Health policy - Essay Example As the Department Manager of Human Resource, I have noticed that there are various challenges that affect the hospital which need to be relayed to the administration. One such problem is shortage of nurses. Most nations across the globe face shortages of nursing professionals, including registered nurses, since their demand exceeds supply either locally, regionally, nationally, or internationally. The World Health Organization approximates that there is a shortage of 3.2 million nurses on a global scale. According to the American National Council of State Board of Nursing, the annual nursing demand growth rate is 7.7% while the growth rate of registered nurses is 2.12% every year. This is a clear indication of nursing shortage. At the William Wishard Memorial Hospital there are only 312 registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and nurse aides. This is an insufficient workforce as compared to the population of Indianapolis estimated at 852,866 in 2013. The population also continues to grow. At the William N. Wishard Memorial Hospital the nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5. This is below the recommended ration of 1:3 by the World Health Organization. The ratio is unsafe and puts the patients at risk. The shortage of nursing practitioners may be as a result of years of underinvestment in health worker education, poor working environment, lack of training and career development, low wages, and ineffective management (Forsyth & McKenzie, 2006). The other causes include underinvestment in nursing education and training, low wages, lack of career development, and lack of motivation. Additionally, there are also no placement programs for the newly trained nurses. The other cause of nursing shortage in William Wishard Memorial Hospital is

Manager - Essay Example This is so because according to many experts, in clinical settings, autocratic leadership styles lead to heightened stress, strain, and less job satisfaction. On the other hand, transformational leadership will help develop an increased level of commitment in the staff. Also, it is found that this will heighten morale among the employees and will empower nurses in management positions. The mere fact is that managers should have enough knowledge and consistency, and at the same time, should be able to empower the subordinates through delegation. According to Campbell and Sinclair (2004), it is highly necessary for the supervisor in an emergency department to develop close working relationship with the ED staff. This is so because this will give the supervisor a chance to know each of the staffs closely. That means the staff will be happily cooperate and even help the manager correct their errors. Another important point for a manager in an emergency department is to guide the staff through examples. It is so because this will help the staffs understand the fact that a member need not always limit their actions to the ones which are included in their job descriptions. Instead, they can be taught through examples how it is possible to help others when they are overloaded. It is highly necessary to ensure close communication with the staffs. This is so because this will give the supervisor a chance to know the responsibility and accountability of each staff. Also, the supervisor comes to know who can be trusted and who cannot be. That means the ones who can be trusted can be delegated later on when there is an emergency (Ducharme, Buckley, Alder & Pelletier, 2009). Another vital point is that the leader should listen to the staff. This gives the staff the feeling that they are valued and respected. Moreover, such a communication will develop the feeling among the staff that the
